Germany’s Laura Fuenfstueck endured a rollercoaster day which saw her quickly lose her big overnight lead before recovering to win her first Ladies European Tour title in the PIF London Championship at Centurion Club on Sunday.

The Golf Saudi-backed event, the third iconic stop in this season’s PIF Global Series, continued its appetite for high drama when Fuenfstueck, three clear at the start of the day, fell back into the field only to haul herself back into contention again, with four birdies on the back nine including 17 and 18 to finish on 1-under 72 and 10-under overall.

Her short winning birdie putt meant she denied Ecuador’s Daniela Darquea, who was set to be her country’s first winner on the LET, one shot behind on 9-under with Golf Saudi ambassador Ann Van Dam of the Netherlands a further shot back on 8-under after a stunning eagle at the 18th catapulted her up the leaderboard.

Fuenfstueck, who had played in 114 LET events before this maiden win, said: ”Last week (at the AIG Women’s Open) helped, in contention first two days and then gave it away over the weekend. So I knew what it was like to not have the start I wanted, but if you stay in there, there’s a lot of chances on the back nine and I’m just super pleased I got over the line.”

On a day which saw the lead ebb and flow and at one point seven players were tied for the lead, Fuenfstueck recovered from a double bogey-bogey at the 3rd and 4th holes to recover her composure and seal the win with a magnificent second shot into the heart of the 18th green.

Her eagle putt rolled past the cup but she made no mistake with the one-foot birdie putt, burying her face in her hands as the enormity of the moment sank in.

Darquea, who only secured her LET card at Qualifying School last year, had looked well placed for an extraordinary maiden win with a closing 5-under 68 including two-nerveless birdies in the last three holes.

Germany’s Laura Fuenfstueck claimed her first win on the Ladies European Tour at Centurion Club

She said: “It was wonderful. I had so much fun. I think the back nine was very competitive. I had a lot of fun. I’m really happy to see Laura win and obviously, I gave it my best. When I got to 15, I saw the leaderboard. I knew I had a chance, and I needed to make a few putts coming in. I’m really happy with the result.”

It was another day of high drama after Team Du Toit, captained by Danielle Du Toit who was only included in the field after Charley Hull’s late withdrawal on Thursday evening, triumphed in the team contest in dramatic style on Saturday.

Big crowds enjoyed another glorious day at Centurion, relishing the activities and clinics on site as well as following some of the world’s best players.

The tournament was another example of Golf Saudi’s support for women’s golf, not only showcasing the world’s best but also giving opportunities to local children and beginners who may have never played before with their Go Golf clinics.

Golf Saudi is also focused on strengthening the golfing ecosystem in Saudi Arabia, driving mass participation in the sport and promoting the Kingdom as a rising golfing, tourism and investment hub.

Germany’s Laura Fuenfstueck will take a three-shot lead into the final round of the PIF London Championship after another stunning display at Centurion Club while Danielle du Toit, who only played after Charley Hull’s 11th-hour withdrawal, captained her team to an astonishing victory on Saturday.

Fuenfstueck fired a 3-under-par 70 to finish on 9-under, three clear of Spain’s Carlota Ciganda, who shot a 1-under 72, and the duo of Belgium’s Manon De Roey and Perrine Delacour of France, who recorded the best rounds of the day with a pair of 67s in the Golf Saudi-backed event.

While Fuenfstueck’s lead ebbed and flowed after two late bogeys brought her closer to the field, the biggest drama of the day came in the team event when the quartet led by South African Du Toit burst through the field to claim a one-shot win from the teams led by England’s Georgia Hall and Chiara Tamburlini of Switzerland.

Du Toit’s week has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Germany’s Laura Fuenfstueck goes into Sunday’s round three clear of the field at Centurion Club

She withdrew after the first round of an event in Sweden after hearing she had become first reserve at Centurion, and late on the Thursday night discovered she was replacing tournament favourite Charley Hull after the Englishwoman withdrew due to injury.

“So I withdrew from the tournament. Then the following day, I got on a plane, and when I landed at Heathrow, I got the call saying I’m now in the tournament.

I played no practice round. I have never seen this course. I played completely blind. I am here”, an incredulous Du Toit told the world’s media.

Du Toit closed birdie-birdie to not only clinch the title but also secure her place in Sunday’s final round with her jubilant team scarcely able to believe what they had achieved.

The story of her team-mates was no less remarkable with Australian Sarah Kemp, recovering from a broken leg sustained in a golf cart accident a year ago, rookie Megan Dennis from England, a former participant in the Aramco Power-Up initiative, and Spain’s Marta Sanz Barrio, the highest placed at 1-under and the only player to eagle the 18th on Saturday, also chipped in with crucial points.

While the team drama was unfolding, Fuenfstueck battled back superbly after a shaky run on the back nine to secure her lead.

After three birdies in four holes before the turn she came back to the field with bogeys at 15 and 17 before another closing birdie restored her advantage.

She said: I just want to play good golf, that will be my goal tomorrow, put good swings on and see where that takes me at the end of the day. I’m sure we are going to have some big crowds tomorrow so I’m really excited to be in that position again.”

Fuenfstueck will be looking over shoulder for the chasing pack, which includes Golf Saudi ambassador Ciganda who again looked likely to challenge before falling away in the final holes.

She said: “I had a lot of chances, but didn’t make enough putts. I think we have a chance to win. I like the course, it’s a fun course to play, and I think you can even go lower. There are some opportunities. Make a few putts tomorrow, and hopefully that’s good enough to win.”

Big crowds again enjoyed sunny but slightly windier conditions on Saturday, with even warmer weather predicted for Sunday’s dramatic finale.

Many of the on-site activities organised by Golf Saudi were enjoyed by hundreds of local children, parents and fans as the weather continued to bless the third iconic stop on this season’s PIF Global Series.

Golf Saudi’s strategic leadership places the support and empowerment of women golfers at its heart, providing outstanding playing opportunities for the world’s best and introducing the sport to new players and beginners across the world with a range of activities and campaigns.

Germany’s Laura Fuenfstueck and Alexandra Swayne of the US Virgin Islands excelled in glorious scoring conditions at Centurion Club on Friday as they carded 6-under-par rounds of 67 to set the first-round pace at the PIF London Championship, the third stop in this season’s PIF Global Series.

They both scored an eagle at the first hole as well as five birdies to lead by one shot from Switzerland’s Chiara Tamburlini and Spain’s Carlota Ciganda, who had looked set to join the leaders until the Golf Saudi ambassador recorded a three-putt bogey at 16th.

ENGLISH PLAYERS

A group of five players lie a further shot back on 4-under in the Golf Saudi-backed event, including a trio of English players Mimi Rhodes, Cara Gainer and Charlotte Laffar.

Fuenfstueck’s superlative 67 helped Team Nadaud, headed by skipper Nastasia Nadaud of France, take the first day honours with a total of -18, two shots clear of the quartet led by South Africa’s Casandra Alexander.

Alexandra Swayne, whose home nation has no golf courses due to hurricane damage and has often been forced to practise in a field near her home, said some of her good round was down to luck.

“I was just seeing shots and hitting them, and I was actually getting quite lucky out there. You always have to be lucky to have a good round, no matter who you are, which golfer, which golf course you play.”

Germany’s Fuenfstueck, who has recorded 18 top-10 finishes on the Ladies European Tour but that first win still remains elusive, said she and her team had put in a lot of practise after a mixed time at the AIG Women’s Open at Royal Porthcawl last week.

“I think today I had a few moments where I’d probably call myself a little bit lucky.  think there was obviously a lot that went really well last week. We spent three days with my coach here, which has been really helpful. Long term, that’s going to be important because we’re figuring out what’s key to my game.”

OTHER CONTENDERS

Ciganda was the standout performer of the Golf Saudi ambassadors on show with Germany’s Olivia Cowan and Celine Boutier of France both still in strong contention after opening 2-under rounds of 71, with Anne Van Dam of the Netherlands a further shot behind on 1-under.

Big crowds were in attendance as the sun shone and many were taking part in the activities on site including Go Golf clinics which are focused on encouraging newcomers into the game.

English golf star Charley Hull is raring to go at Centurion Club this week at the PIF London Championship, after an excellent T2 finish at the AIG Women’s Open last week which is the third event on the PIF Global Series in 2025 taking place from 8-10 August.

Charley, you come into this week off the back of a great week last week, obviously second place. How was that? I think you said that you potentially weren’t even going to make the cut.

No, it was good. I feel good coming into this week. I played really well the last two rounds last week.

From Friday afternoon, I played very well. I find links golf very hard, especially when I didn’t quite come into the event as fit as I wanted to.

I was ill and I hurt my back, and links golf is not my comfort zone. When you’re not comfortable and don’t feel quite pure in it, I’m more nervous for a week like that.

But my coach Matt, my putting coach Nick, and I worked very hard that week to get me where I am in my game, so big credit to them.

What did you need to do in your game specifically?

I was working on getting my hands more forward when putting because they were too far behind the ball. I also had too much wrist in my backswing with my coach on my full shot, so I was eliminating the wrist movement.

I was working on staying more grounded through the ball on the way through — just random things like that.

When I was ill at Evian, I fainted three times, lost my balance, and then pulled my back out the week before.

All these things felt like the world was against me, which was really frustrating because I had been looking forward to the British Open all year.

On Wednesday night, I said to someone that I didn’t think I would make the cut and couldn’t picture it in my head.

The next day we warmed up with a much shorter routine than usual, just an hour and a half before tee time instead of my usual longer warmup.

So I just worked hard to get my feel back, and by Sunday, I didn’t feel like I struck a bad shot.

How are you feeling now?

All good. I took Tuesday off because I was absolutely knackered, had so much adrenaline coming in, and the wind is tiring.

I’m getting ready for this week, playing on home soil, so I’m really looking forward to it.

You love your fitness. Are you still off it at the moment?

Yes, I’ve been off for six weeks now. It’s been annoying. I was about to get back into it this week, then I rolled my ankle yesterday in the car park.

I have an MRI coming up soon, but I probably won’t be able to train for another three weeks. There’s always something.

Charley, the crowds in Wales were electric. How does that affect you mentally? Does it help your game?

I really loved it. It was electric, especially at 14 on Sunday. It was so good. It’s a shame about my finish because 15 is a tricky par three.

I hit a perfect shot that ended up just short on a tricky downhill putt. The next hole, the wind was strong from the left, and driver would have put me in the bunker, so I used a rescue club.

I hit it on the right edge, about a yard right of the bunker. I thought the ball would move because of the wind, but I hit it too pure and it went straight into the bunker. I made bogey there.

On 17, I hit a lovely shot into the green — a hole where even hitting 10 balls into the same spot results in 10 different positions.

I missed the putt, but I aimed where I thought it was going to break and hit the right stroke. On 18, I had a chip shot over the bunker, a good flop, but didn’t hold the putt.

At the end of the day, being 11 back going into the weekend was really good, and having the crowds behind me was really encouraging.

I felt a lot of pressure with family, friends, and crowds watching, but it showed me the extra practice I put in paid off even when I wasn’t feeling 100%. I love playing in the UK and I really like Wales.

We heard from Celine Boutier earlier about the impact of Golf Saudi with their support for events like this and players like yourself. Could you give an example of their impact on you or other players?

When I first went to Saudi in 2020, there weren’t really any women playing golf there. Over the next few years, the amount of young kids playing golf there has been unbelievable.

It’s had a massive impact. It’s brilliant what they do for the game. They put on big events for us and are very generous with how they treat us — players’ lounges, physios, everything. It’s really good for women’s golf.

Well done last week. I missed the beginning of the press conference. Regarding your health — the golf game was fantastic last week, but are you feeling 100% again?

Yes, I feel 100%. I was buzzing yesterday coming out of physio after getting my back tape on. I booked a four or five-hour practice session with my coach last Wednesday, which is nice and quiet and I love practicing.

I was really excited all week. Coming out of the locker room, I had a skip in my step because I love practicing.

But then I fell over a curb in the car park and was lying on the floor shouting for my boyfriend to come get me.

The security guard was watching me and I heard my ankle pop. I thought I broke it. Someone picked me up and put me in the car.

I went down so quickly, I nearly fainted. I was not sure if I was overreacting. I started moving my ankle and it’s nowhere near as bad as I thought.

I will get an MRI today. I’m gutted I couldn’t practice yesterday and took Monday and Tuesday off. I usually feel guilty if I take more than two days off practice.

Up until three years ago, I never took more than one or two days off golf. Over Christmas I took five or six days, but that was the maximum. I just want to go out and hit some balls to see how it feels. I’m a very clumsy person.

It seems like this is a regular occurence with you? (said jokingly)

Yes, people say that. Thomas Bjorn was watching me on the floor and said every time he sees me, I’m lying down somewhere.

I don’t do it on purpose; I’m naturally clumsy. My sister is the clumsiest person I know, and I used to make fun of her for it. I fell over in the middle of the road about two years ago. It runs in my dad’s genes.

Speaking of your dad, I saw him walking around on the course on Sunday. Is he aware of that? I heard he doesn’t really watch you.

No, not really. He likes to find a mound in the grass and sit down. He gets nervous watching me but he’s the most relaxed dad ever.

I wouldn’t be where I am today without him. He was never pushy when I was younger. He only got angry once.

I was about seven years old and had a golf lesson with my coach Kevin Theobald. I wouldn’t listen and insisted on doing things my way.

The coach told me off, and I didn’t like it. After hitting balls, I was supposed to pick them up and put them in the practice bag, but I was upset. I got my seven iron and hit low shots at my coach to say “don’t tell me off again.” My dad saw this from 20 yards away and came over to tell me off.

When we got home, he snapped all my golf clubs. I cried, and the next day he bought me a new set of clubs. Apart from that, he never told me off.

As long as I give it my all and try my best, that’s all he wants. I think that’s important for kids growing up in golf — parents need to find the right balance so kids love the game. Credit to my dad for that.

Back to fitness — you’re going to have an MRI, yes?

Yes, probably later today. I was looking forward to this event all year. I will be teeing up tomorrow. I just want to make sure everything is 100%.

My luck has been a bit annoying lately — one thing after another. But hitting balls shouldn’t be an issue.

The physios are more worried about me for the rest of the season. I have some good events coming up. It’s good the injury happened now and not before this week.

One last thing — you’re on the team for the International Crown?

Yes, I’m looking forward to that. I’m definitely going to play, probably the two events in Korea: the International Crown and the Korean event. The BMW is good too.

A gusty day two ended much like the first at Centurion Club, with Leona Maguire producing top quality golf to remain two shots ahead of Georgia Hall at Aramco Team Series presented by PIF – London.

Maguire carded three birdies across her round, two of which came on yet another flawless back nine for the two-time LPGA winner, all while Hall put the pressure on with five birdies on her front nine to take the lead early on.

The strong winds presented a challenge once again on the par-73 course, and the Irishwoman had to adapt her game – something she relished and enjoyed.

Yeah, it’s really windy out there. It’s probably two, three shot winds in places,” said Maguire after her round. “It’s playing a little bit linksy. The course is running out, getting firm and fast, and the wind is quite strong.  It was swirling in places, so you just try to hit a few punchy shots that I probably haven’t used in a while. It’s definitely a welcome back to European golf. It’s a good test and I enjoyed it.

Leona Maguire battled strong winds at Centurion to maintain her lead

The team competition is set for a play-off finale between Team Hall and Team Nadaud on the morning of the final day.  Both Team Nadaud and Team Hall finished the final day of team competition on 24-under-par in considerably tougher conditions than round one, with both team’s amateurs adding valuable scores to force the play-off.  A blemish free round from Nadaud’s teammate Napoleaova, and the best golf she has played in months from captain Hall both making the difference for their respective teams.

Hall said, “It was so windy, much windier than yesterday. I didn’t hit a shot wrong, I played really good golf and probably the best I played and a few months. We had a good day again, in really tough conditions.”

Diksha Dagar, who is set to represent India at the 2024 Summer Olympics, carded a 68, the joint-best round of the second day, with five birdies and no dropped shots to move her firmly inside the top ten and in contention for a tilt at the title.

It was a dramatic day one of the Aramco Team Series presented by PIF – London, as Ireland’s Leona Maguire fired a seven-under-par 66 at Centurion Club to take the sole lead.

World No.8, and favourite this week, Charley Hull, was forced to withdraw after only six holes played, early in the morning.

A shoulder injury was ruled by a physiotherapist as too much for Hull to continue with, following a week that has also been marred with illness.

But there was no false start from Maguire, who was blemish free as she took control at the top of the leaderboard.

With four birdies on her front nine, three on her back nine and an impressive up and down to save par on 18, Maguire broke away from Austria’s Sarah Schober, holding a one-shot lead.

Maguire’s brilliance also drove her team to the top of the Team leaderboard, tied top alongside Team Hall and Team Itturioz on 14-under-par, heading into the second and final day of the team competition.

The world no.32, who is set to represent the Republic of Ireland at the Summer Olympics in Paris, was full of praise for her team, which included Liz Young and Marta Sanz Barrio.

“We were all making a few birdies out there which definitely helps,” said Maguire. “We have a nice atmosphere in the team which made it more comfortable out there.”

Nuria Iturrioz, who sits T3 on the individual leaderboard, scored four birdies on her front nine to help her team leap into first place early in the day, having started in the morning.

“We are happy,” said the Spaniard, who was relishing the team feel. “We played really well and we’re a really good team, we have good vibes, and we’ll keep going tomorrow.”

Sarah Schober, who missed the cut in last week’s VP Bank Swiss Open, carded seven birdies in her round of six-under-par, and sits just one shot back from the lead overnight.

“I’m just very happy that today, everything came together and clicked.

I want to keep doing what I’m doing. There is still two days to go so I’m very relaxed and just want to enjoy it out there with the ladies.”

The UK leg of the Ladies European Tour’s Aramco Team Series, which is being held at Centurion Club from July 3-5, is shaping up as a preview for the Paris Olympics, with Great Britain’s Charley Hull and Georgia Hall set to tee it up in the high-class field which includes World No1 Nelly Korda.

The English duo are sure to be a hit with the home crowds, and with further announcements set to follow on a strong field, both are looking to build on fantastic 2023 outings at the tournament.

Last year, Hull came up just short to the all-conquering world no.1 Nelly Korda in the individual competition, while Hall was able to captain her team to victory in extremely difficult conditions, edging out Hull’s team by just one stroke.

Now England’s dynamic duo are aiming to secure their places representing Great Britain at the 2024 Paris Olympics and become the first to win a medal for Team GB in a women’s golf event.

The golf at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Korda is set to defend her gold medal from Tokyo 2020, kicks off a little over a month after the Aramco Team Series – London event, and the ‘Major-like’ event at Centurion will provide the pair the perfect opportunity to prepare themselves in their quest for medals.

Hull has recently achieved a career-high world ranking of seventh following her impressive runner-up finish at the Aramco Team Series in Tampa in March.

Reflecting on her preparations for the summer, Hull commented: “At the start of the season I sat down and thought about how I wanted this year to pan out. I knew that there would be an important summer of golf ahead with the Olympic Games, Solheim Cup and chasing down my first Major title.

Centurion Club is always in immaculate condition

“I’m in the best place I’ve ever been in my career, mentally and physically, so to have the Aramco Team Series at home is the best way to open the intense summer ahead.

Playing in a field with some of the players I’ll face in Paris, and at a tournament like this that has that Major-like feel, will be a great dress rehearsal for me to aim for that gold medal.”

Excited about the prospect of returning to London, Hall said: “The Aramco Team Series in London will be my first appearance in the event this year and I’m buzzing to get back into playing with a team which will hopefully be a great transition to the Solheim Cup in September.

“Competing against Charley as a team captain again will add an extra layer of excitement, especially with friends and family cheering us on. I’ve played my fair share of Majors and outside of those, the Aramco Team Series matches the energy and field the best. It’s always a great competition with the top players out there.”

Joining Hull and Hall will be a field stacked with talent, including Anne Van Dam of the Netherlands, Singapore’s Shannon Tan, and India’s Diksha Dagar.

Nelly Korda and the team led by Georgia Hall sit at the top of the respective leaderboards at the end of a suspended day two of the Aramco Team Series at Centurion Club.

The second round was suspended at 1.40pm due to thunder and lightning in the surrounding area, but play got underway again at 3.10pm. However, play was suspended due to bad light on Saturday evening and of the 36 teams, there are still two left to complete their second round.

In the individual competition, world number two Korda leads the way on nine-under-par after firing a round of 69 on Saturday to establish a commanding five-shot lead. The American opened with a birdie at the first and made her next on hole 13, she made a superb eagle on 15, but dropped a shot one hole later before finishing with a birdie on the last.

“It was really difficult,” said Korda. “It’s probably the most brutal weather I have played in a really long time. I would say this was one of my best rounds this year.”

As for her thrilling eagle on 15, Korda perhaps surprised her caddie Jason McDede by reaching the green in two.

“Yesterday, when I played 15, the hole was downwind and was in off the left and Jason told me it was a three-shot hole for sure and there was no way I could get there in two. I just hit this bullet driver, I was hitting a controlled driver like a low stinger all day which was really helping me in the wind, and I got up to the ball and I just had a perfect number. I hit it really good and everything came together.

She added: “Getting to play this type of golf occasionally is really fun, where you get to be creative and hit these low stingers. I actually had a lot of fun out there, the weather may have not been too great, but when you’re playing well in these rounds you get to play with a bit more creativity.”

Home favourite Charley Hull started the day alongside Korda at the leaderboard summit. However, the English ace was unable to reproduce her first-day magic and slipped off the pace as a result of a 76. South Africa’s Nicole Garcia sits in outright second place on four-under-par after carding a round of 71 for a second consecutive day. Sweden’s Sofie Bringner and Japan’s Yuri Onishi are in a share of third place on three-under-par at the end of the second day.

Three players are in a tie for fifth place with Germany’s Leonie Harm, England’s Charley Hull and Spain’s Nuria Iturrioz on two-under-par. Austria’s Emma Spitz, Georgia Hall and Finland’s Noora Komulainen sit one shot further back rounding out the top 10 on one-under.

The quartet of Georgia Hall, Kylie Henry, Lea Anne Bramwell and amateur Michael Austick are leading the team event on -24. They sat in third place overnight on 14-under but came strong in their finishing holes. Despite incredibly windy conditions, Team Hall fired a round of 10-under-par which included a birdie on 17 and eagle on 18 to post the score to beat.

Hall, who rolled in the eagle on 18, said: “It is extremely breezy out there and my 3-wood only went 200 yards, but obviously I’m very happy with that. It contributed a lot to the team score, and we’ll see where we are at at the end of the day.

“I’m not so sure it will be enough because there are still so many holes to be played out there for so many people, it’s a bit of a wait-and-see,” said Henry. “I think we’ve done really well anyway and it’s still going to be a really good finish for the team. I think we’re pretty happy with what we’ve done in these conditions.”

The quartet finished their round in the early afternoon, having teed it up this morning, but despite this they sit on the brink of victory with just two teams left to finish. Team Hull, who led overnight, came up just short after firing a round of five-under-par on day two at Centurion Club to finish on 23-under-par. Team Garcia are in third at 21-under with Team Carta on 20-under in fourth and four teams in a tie for fifth place on 19-under-par.

Georgia Hall is captain of the leading team after two rounds
