To celebrate its 18th year, The Shire London has announced the launch of a brand-new “Combo” tee layout, available from 1st June 2025. The move marks a significant evolution in how golfers experience the only UK course designed by Seve Ballesteros.

Famed for its unique 6x par 3s, 6x par 4s, and 6x par 5s configuration, and iconic features such as the island green par-3 opening hole and the S-shaped 18th green.

The Shire London has long held a reputation for both quality and difficulty. Now, with the introduction of the Combo Card, players will have the chance to enjoy the layout in a more forgiving, diverse, and enjoyable way without losing the course’s core character.

The Combo Tee layout creatively blends tee positions from across the existing setup, including a mix of the Ruby tees (forward) and Emerald tees (championship tees ) allowing players to tackle each hole in a new way.

EXCITING FINISH

One of the most exciting changes is the reimagined 18th hole: traditionally a par-4, it will now play as a risk-and-reward par-5 from the Emerald tees, tempting longer hitters to go for the green in two, while still offering a safe lay-up route in front of the signature “S” lake.

“Golf is supposed to be fun and enjoyable,” said Tony Menai-Davis, Managing Director of The Shire London. “Over the years, we know the course’s difficulty may have put some golfers off.

With the Combo Card, we’re offering a more accessible and scoreable version of The Shire London, one that still honours Seve’s genius but opens the experience up to more people.”

The launch of the Combo Card coincides with The Shire London’s 18th birthday, marking a new chapter for the much-celebrated course.

Available to both members and visitors, the new layout reaffirms The Shire’s commitment to making championship level golf more inclusive and enjoyable for players of all skill levels.

The Golf Trust has launched its 2025 fundraising project, Going the Extra Mile.

A team of 12 amateur golfers will be playing 18 rounds of golf across 5 countries in just 6 days this June, all with the ambitious aim of raising £80,000 to purchase 3 new Paragolfer all-terrain wheelchairs.

This new project builds on the success of Project 24, which raised enough money to purchase 2 Paragolfers which are in use at Walmley Golf Club and Roehampton Club in England.

The ambition is to place the 3 new machines in parts of the UK where there is currently no local access to these specialist vehicles, which enable people with disabilities to play golf.

Demand for these machines has grown significantly in the past few years as awareness of the positive impact the Paragolfer can have on physical and mental health.

“When we started campaigning and fundraising to make golf using the Paragolfer more accessible for people with mobility issues there were none available for public use” explains founder of The Golf Trust Cae Menai-Davis.

“6 years later, there are now 10 Paragolfers publicly available to use and free to access, but we still need more.  We want the industry and golfers to get behind us so that we can show what happens when we all go the extra mile.”

Golf Trust
The epic fundraising challenge starting June 16th in Watford and ending 6 days later in St Andrews.

The team will set off from the home of The Golf Trust, The Shire London on June 16th and finish their journey at the home of Golf, St Andrews 6 days later.

Along the way, the team will play different types of golf courses highlighting the accessibility and affordability of golf.

They will also be meeting local people and communities along the way who have experienced the positive impact of golf and sharing their stories through social media and a documentary.

Fundraising is already underway with a fabulous crowdfunder where donations can be made to win prizes including amazing golf experiences and the hottest golf tickets:  https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/the-golf-trust—going-the-extra-mile

There are several sponsorship opportunities available to businesses looking to support the campaign whose social footprint in 2024 exceeded 21 million views across all platforms.

A new Ryder Cup-style team matchplay event between golfers with a disability from Europe and the USA is to be held at The Shire London this spring.

The inaugural Cairns Cup is scheduled to take place from May 11-13, with fourball, foursomes and singles matches being played on consecutive days.

The tournament will be part of week-long Disability Golf Festival, with a Charity Am-Am event taking place on May 9 and a Disability & Inclusivity Open Day on May 10.

The organisers of the event are aiming to raise awareness of disability golf and provide a platform to raise funds to promote golf as a sport for all. Each team will bring a squad of 16 players, although only 12 will play on any given day. Each team will have players with at least six different disabilities and WHS handicaps ranging from scratch to 54, making the event truly inclusive and available to all golfers who have a disability.

The European team will contain disabled golfers from England, Wales, Germany, Holland and Portugal, the US team features players from North Carolina, Florida, Oregon, Alabama, Georgia, Michigan and Indiana.

Mike Browne is looking forward to competing in the Cairns Cup next month

Among those competing on the European team is 43-year-old former soldier Mike Browne, who had his left leg amputated below the knee after a motorcycle accident in 2011. Mike, who is attached to Long Sutton Golf Club in Somerset, got his handicap down from 28 to four in just 18 months after taking up the game in 2014 and turned professional last year. He has won national disabled championships in France, the Czech Republic and South African and has competed on the Gecko Mini-Tour in Spain, as well as European Disabled Golfers Association events.

“I’d always thought golf was a sport for posh old men, but it draws people in from all walks of life,” said Mike. “It’s played a massive part in my rehabilitation and might even have saved my life. I have met so many amazing people and had so many fantastic experiences which I would not have enjoyed if I still had two legs. I’m really looking forward to playing in the Cairns Cup and shining a light on the fact that disability does not have to stop you from leading a full and active life.”

The Cairns Cup will be a biannual event, with future matches set to be held in Michigan in 2024, Celtic Manor in 2026, Florida in 2028 and San Roque, Spain in 2030.

Golf News is proud to a be the media partner for the event, while several other brands have added their support, including Great Days Golf, The Social Golfer, The Samuel Ryder Family, along with many other non-golfing companies.

Any businesses wishing to lend their support or to get involved should contact Ian Mullins on 07961 198966 or email thecairnscup@gmail.com.
