{"id":9184,"date":"2019-08-01T08:08:44","date_gmt":"2019-08-01T08:08:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dpd.aef.myftpupload.com\/?p=9184"},"modified":"2019-08-09T08:09:24","modified_gmt":"2019-08-09T08:09:24","slug":"centurion-club-hertfordshire-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/course-reviews\/centurion-club-hertfordshire-2\/","title":{"rendered":"CENTURION CLUB, HERTFORDSHIRE"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em>Six years after it first opened, Centurion Club has developed into the epitome of a modern golf club, where its members\u00a0enjoy first-class service and stunning clubhouse facilities to match the quality of its world-renowned championship course, writes Nick Bayly<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The reasons for golf\u2019s declining popularity\u00a0are many and varied, but among those that\u00a0encouraged the owners of the Centurion\u00a0Club to set up shop on the outskirts of Hemel\u00a0Hempstead in 2010 was golf\u2019s failure to keep up to\u00a0speed with the lifestyle demands of the modern\u00a0member.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of a genuine service culture, draconian\u00a0dress codes, endless tee time restrictions, treating\u00a0female members as second-class citizens, and\u00a0a diminishing pride in the presentation of golf\u00a0courses and clubhouses, many of them worn\u00a0down by years of under-investment, gave the team\u00a0behind Centurion hope that a club that dared to do\u00a0something differently could not only survive, but\u00a0positively thrive.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9181\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9181\" style=\"width: 443px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9181\" src=\"https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Centurion-1st-hole.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"443\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Centurion-1st-hole.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Centurion-1st-hole-320x213.jpg 320w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Centurion-1st-hole-480x320.jpg 480w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Centurion-1st-hole-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Centurion-1st-hole-640x427.jpg 640w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Centurion-1st-hole-832x555.jpg 832w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9181\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Centurion has matured into a truly world class layout<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Located a few miles west of St Albans, and just a\u00a0few minutes from junction 8 of the M1, Centurion\u00a0has shaken up the traditional private golf club\u00a0model by offering a genuinely five-star, members-only\u00a0experience, while remaining both affordable,\u00a0yet refreshingly unencumbered by the stuffy and\u00a0elitist attitudes that many high-end private clubs\u00a0insist on adhering to.<\/p>\n<p>Representing a blueprint for how a golf club for\u00a0the 21st century should be operated, Centurion has\u00a0been open for the best part of six years now, and in\u00a0that time has built up a 600-strong membership that\u00a0is enjoying a fast-maturing golf course and the kind\u00a0of facilities that you\u2019d expect from a five-star hotel.<\/p>\n<p>With that ethos, it will come as no surprise that\u00a0you\u2019ll find no club captains or green committees\u00a0here, and you\u2019ll certainly find no posters explaining\u00a0the dress code (there isn\u2019t one), and there is a\u00a0refreshing absence of noticeboards. It\u2019s access all\u00a0areas, with not a \u2018keep out\u2019 sign in sight.<\/p>\n<p>While the 18-hole golf course \u2013 more of which\u00a0later \u2013 has been open from the beginning, as it were,\u00a0the clubhouse, as is often the case in new builds,\u00a0came later, with the impressive two-storey structure\u00a0that spans the entire length of the large pond that\u00a0guards the right-hand approach to the course\u2019s\u00a0closing hole, opening in 2016.\u00a0The \u00a35 million edifice is the icing on a particular\u00a0appetising cake, the likes of which are no doubt\u00a0being baked by the club\u2019s expert team of chefs, who\u00a0have turned the impressive ground-floor restaurant\u00a0into a destination not just for golf club members,\u00a0but for diners from all over the region. Saturday\u00a0cream teas are a virtual sell-out, as are Sunday\u00a0lunches, while Friday and Saturday nights always\u00a0require a reservation to secure a table.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9178\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9178\" style=\"width: 562px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9178\" src=\"https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/dining-room.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"562\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/dining-room.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/dining-room-320x180.jpg 320w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/dining-room-480x270.jpg 480w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/dining-room-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/dining-room-640x360.jpg 640w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/dining-room-832x468.jpg 832w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 562px) 100vw, 562px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9178\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The restaurant offers fine dining in a relaxed environment overlooking the golf course<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Michelin-starred Jeff Galvin, who is a member at\u00a0the club, helped set up the restaurant, and although\u00a0he is no longer directly involved, his ethos and\u00a0commitment to quality remains very much intact.\u00a0And while you can still get a damn fine bacon\u00a0sandwich \u2013 on a toasted brioche bun, of course \u2013 in\u00a0the relaxed surroundings of the upstairs sports bar\u00a0before your round, downstairs in the more formal\u00a080-cover dining room, the seasonally-changing\u00a0menu offers a slightly more refined culinary\u00a0experience.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a clever part of the clubhouse\u2019s design that\u00a0it disguises its true purpose with such skill. All the\u00a0golfing elements \u2013 the locker rooms and the golfer\u2019s\u00a0bar and lounge, are located upstairs, tucked away\u00a0from the more public spaces, while the ground\u00a0floor wouldn\u2019t look out of place in a boutique hotel.\u00a0Walk into the side entrance, and past the pro shop\u00a0\u2013 which is more akin to a boutique emporium \u2013 and\u00a0you\u2019d be hard-pressed to know you\u2019re in a golf\u00a0club at all. There are no endless rows of wooden\u00a0noticeboards and not a silver trophy in sight. It\u2019s a\u00a0light and airy space, that moves seamlessly from\u00a0one area to the next, feeling intimate, yet spacious,\u00a0and above all, relaxed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9176\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9176\" style=\"width: 505px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9176\" src=\"https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/lounge.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"505\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/lounge.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/lounge-320x180.jpg 320w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/lounge-480x270.jpg 480w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/lounge-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/lounge-640x360.jpg 640w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/lounge-832x468.jpg 832w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 505px) 100vw, 505px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9176\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The stylish and spacious clubhouse offers numerous inviting spaces to relax before or after a round<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Elsewhere within the building there are\u00a0separate rooms for private dining, conference\u00a0spaces, although only members and companies\u00a0with connections to the club are allowed to host\u00a0corporate golf days here.\u00a0And while the main entrance at most clubhouses\u00a0are often cluttered with a haphazard scattering of\u00a0trolleys and golf bags, here, all of the accoutrements\u00a0of golf, including a small buggy fleet, are hidden\u00a0behind high stone walls \u2013 out of sight, yet close at\u00a0hand.<\/p>\n<p>The club\u2019s co-founder and managing director is\u00a0Scott Evans, a genial Scotsman who brings almost 30\u00a0years\u2019 experience working in golf club management\u00a0at the likes of Loch Lomond, Dubai Creek, Yearwood\u00a0Lakes, and, most recently, Troon Golf Management,\u00a0to the table, and he knows better than most what it\u00a0takes to keep discerning golfers happy.\u00a0\u201cOur plan from the outset was to create a club\u00a0that rivals and goes beyond the very best for its\u00a0quality, while getting rid of the all the stuffiness and\u00a0small-mindedness that permeates through many\u00a0traditional members clubs. The challenge has been\u00a0to create a quality product worthy of our location so\u00a0close to central London, and to be considered one of\u00a0the finest available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the clubhouse is suitably impressive, the\u00a0reputation of any golf club still quite rightly hangs\u00a0on the quality of its golf course, and here is where\u00a0the Centurion more than lives up to the hype.\u00a0While many courses state their claim to fame on\u00a0a handful of good holes, it\u2019s as hard as it is unfair\u00a0to single out any one hole at Centurion, given\u00a0the quality and variety of the challenges on offer.<\/p>\n<p>Measuring 7,195 yards from the back tees, which\u00a0plays to a par of 72, the middle and forward men\u2019s\u00a0tees take it down to a more manageable 6,850 and\u00a06,555 yards respectively.\u00a0The layout begins in an attractive area of pine\u00a0woodland on the western edge of the 250-acre site,\u00a0where the opening five holes cut a green swathe\u00a0through the tree line. A sweeping downhill right-to-left par five opens up proceedings nicely, before\u00a0switching into a stunning par-three, where a raised\u00a0green provides a tempting, if often elusive target.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9182\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9182\" style=\"width: 483px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9182\" src=\"https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Centurion-17th-main-shotjpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"483\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Centurion-17th-main-shotjpg.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Centurion-17th-main-shotjpg-320x213.jpg 320w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Centurion-17th-main-shotjpg-480x320.jpg 480w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Centurion-17th-main-shotjpg-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Centurion-17th-main-shotjpg-640x427.jpg 640w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Centurion-17th-main-shotjpg-832x555.jpg 832w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 483px) 100vw, 483px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9182\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The testing par-3 14th<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is followed by a superb 405-yard par four, which\u00a0swings right to left, with a greedy bunker guarding\u00a0the corner of the dog-leg.\u00a0After the beautiful par-three fifth \u2013 a 160-yard\u00a0downhiller to a flat green with little margin for\u00a0error on all sides \u2013 the course opens out over more\u00a0rolling terrain, although thanks to sizeable mounds\u00a0between the fairways, a sense of individuality is\u00a0maintained for almost every hole. The 450-yard\u00a0sixth is a really testing par four, with a big drive\u00a0required to bring a flag that is hidden behind a\u00a0raised bank into play, while the ninth introduces the\u00a0first of four significant water hazards, although the\u00a0toughest of them is probably the 12th, a 400-yard\u00a0par four with a pond fronting the putting surface to\u00a0catch under-hit approaches.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9177\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9177\" style=\"width: 531px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9177\" src=\"https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1-Centurion-18th.jpg\" alt=\"The par-five 18th provides a fittingly dramatic finale\" width=\"531\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1-Centurion-18th.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1-Centurion-18th-320x213.jpg 320w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1-Centurion-18th-480x320.jpg 480w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1-Centurion-18th-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1-Centurion-18th-640x427.jpg 640w, https:\/\/golfnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1-Centurion-18th-832x555.jpg 832w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 531px) 100vw, 531px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9177\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The par-five 18th provides a fittingly dramatic finale<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 190-yard 14th is as testing a par three as you\u2019ll\u00a0find, playing uphill all the way to a raised green\u00a0that has trees back, right and left, and bunkers\u00a0at the front, while the 150-yard 17th is another\u00a0stunning short hole, with two trees standing like\u00a0sentries behind the green, while water lurks to catch\u00a0anything hit long and left.<\/p>\n<p>The holes have all been given Latin names, such\u00a0as Alma Mater, Pro Forma and Hydro, to reflect the\u00a0Roman history of the local area, and the course\u00a0closes with the aptly-named Ad Infinitum, a 545-yard par five whose green sits below the clubhouse.\u00a0With the putting surface protected by a large lake\u00a0bounded by a stone wall to the right, it\u2019s a fitting\u00a0finale to a thoroughly entertaining round that will\u00a0test all parts of your game.<\/p>\n<p>Prepared to tournament specifications, the course\u00a0offers all year-round playability, with arguably some\u00a0of the best putting surfaces to be found anywhere\u00a0in the country. Built on sand, the bent grass surfaces\u00a0are like carpets \u2013 fast, true and firm, yet receptive to\u00a0the right kind of shot.\u00a0Given its tour-standard quality it was perhaps\u00a0fitting that the European Tour chose Centurion to\u00a0stage the revolutionary GolfSixes event in 2017 and\u00a02018, which not only introduced the golfing world\u00a0to a faster, more exciting alternative to 72-hole\u00a0stroke play tournaments, but also alerted the world\u00a0to the quality of the venue, with many of the players\u00a0that took part in the event coming away wanting a\u00a0regular, conventional Tour event to be held at the\u00a0club in the future.<\/p>\n<p>That request has been met, in part, as next year\u00a0the club will host one of the showpiece events in the\u00a0women\u2019s professional game, the UL International\u00a0Crown. The biennial matchplay event, which is run\u00a0by the LPGA Tour and managed by IMG, sees teams\u00a0of four representing the top eight golfing nations in\u00a0the world compete over four days of matches from\u00a0August 27-30, 2020. It\u2019s a real feather in Centurion\u2019s\u00a0cap, and promises to showcase the talents of the\u00a0world\u2019s best women players to a UK audience for the\u00a0first time outside of the Women\u2019s British Open.<\/p>\n<p>For those that would like to enjoy their own piece\u00a0of the action at Centurion, seven-day, corporate,\u00a0business, and international memberships are\u00a0offered, all of which are tailored to provide the\u00a0most flexible options to suit the needs of the golfer,\u00a0whether that be one who plays two or three times\u00a0a week, or just once a month. Either way, being\u00a0a member, or knowing one, will be the only way\u00a0to access the course, as visitors can only play as a\u00a0member\u2019s guest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe different membership categories offer\u00a0greater flexibility to suit each member\u2019s lifestyle,\u201d\u00a0says Scott. \u201cWe want people to feel that it is their\u00a0club, and they can come and go as they please.\u00a0There are no tee times, no visitors, and the course\u00a0will never be bunged up with endless inter-club\u00a0matches or societies. We have created a club that is\u00a0already renowned for its friendly atmosphere and\u00a0outstanding standard of service.
